SCRT announces 2018 Summer Repertory Season
Season Announcement Press Release
TRINIDAD, CO - Under the leadership of Executive Director Harriet Vaugeois and Artistic Director Eli Carpenter, the SCRT is proud to announce its 2018 Summer Repertory Season.
Says Carpenter, “We’re in a thrilling place as we look back on the first 15 years of the SCRT and step into the next 15 years of the organization and my first season as Artistic Director. I’m enthusiastic about creating bold, daring, provocative programming choices and overjoyed to bring what we’ve dubbed ‘a season with a splash’ to southern Colorado.”
Opening the three production repertory season will be the regional premiere of Fly by Night, a new, dark musical comedy conceived by Kim Rosenstock and written by Will Connolly, Michael Mitnick, and Kim Rosenstock. Fly by Night will be directed by Carpenter and will run June 15 - August 19.
Following Fly by Night, the SCRT will produce the Tony Award-winning Evita, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Under the direction and choreography of James F. Bruenger III, the production will be conceptually reimagined and scaled to become a more intimate production on the newly re-designed SCRT stage. Evita will run July 8-August 17.
Completing the season will be the living-room battlefield comedy God of Carnage, by accomplished and award-winning playwright, Yasmine Reza. This sharp and witty satire, which won a Tony Award for best play, will be directed by Jamie Billings and will run July 20-August 18.
Additionally, the SCRT will be presenting a number of new lines of programming, most notably a New Works initiative. In the initiative’s inaugural year, the SCRT is pleased to announce 2018 Writer in Residence, Alexander Sage Oyen. Oyen’s work has been produced in New York City and major regional theaters across the country. As part of the Writer in Residence program, a new musical by Oyen will be workshopped with public readings on August 16 and August 18. In a statement Carpenter says, “I believe it is not only of incredible benefit to the theatre and the community to workshop and premiere new work, but it is vital to the future of American theatre for institutions to support and nurture emerging writers and artists.”

Heading into its 16th season, the SCRT is the region’s crown-jewel for performing arts. Each summer the SCRT brings a company of 15-20 actors, designers, and directors to Trinidad for the repertory company. In 2013, Trinidad became a Certified Colorado Creative District and is now the demonstration project for Colorado’s Space to Create program fueling a surge in downtown historic building renovations and creative enterprise. With a rich history in the arts and creative achievement, Trinidad's downtown Creative District is a focal point of tourism and continued economic growth. SCRT sits in the heart of it all.
