SCRT announces new Artistic Director

Artistic Director - Eli Carpenter

TRINIDAD, CO - The SCRT Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Eli Carpenter as the Artistic Director of the summer repertory theatre company beginning with the 2018 Season.

The SCRT Board of Directors is confident Carpenter will lead the SCRT from a regional theatre company to a nationally recognized entity. The SCRT named Carpenter to the post following the retirement of Founding Artistic Director, Fred Vaugeois. Says Carpenter, “Trinidad is a beautiful, unique, and blossoming destination city that is incredibly lucky to have the SCRT as the center point of the downtown creative district. Fred Vaugeois created outstanding success for the SCRT’s first 15 years and I’m overjoyed and grateful to lead the SCRT into its next 15 years.” In a statement from Harriet Vaugeois, SCRT Executive Director, Vaugeois says, “Eli Carpenter fits perfectly into the direction that SCRT was hoping to go. His fresh vision for SCRT is now driving every decision being made. SCRT leadership embraces Eli’s sense of collaboration, his appreciation for Trinidad’s unique history, his diversified training and experience, and his plans for deepening audience engagement, fostering new works, and producing an ever more diversified and challenging theatrical fare.”

Carpenter is looking to expand the SCRT’s audience understanding of the boundaries of theatre by broadening the scope and style of work, introducing new lines of programming, and beginning a New Works initiative including activating a writer in residence. On structuring the season, Carpenter says, “This season will feature the regional premiere of a new musical and a Tony Award winner for Best Play. Additionally, we will be reimagining, conceptualizing, and scaling a large cast, Tony-winning best musical to fit an acting ensemble of ten. We are setting out to make bold, brave choices that really shake up the work done and seen in Trinidad. We have dubbed this season ‘a season with a splash’.” Details of the 2018 Season will be announced late January 2018.

Carpenter is a native of Colorado and a graduate of Denver School of the Arts. He attended New York University. Most recently, Eli directed WALL! A Thinly Veiled Metaphor for Our Current Political Landscape Disguised as a New American Musical for the Edinburgh, Scotland Fringe Festival. Previously, Eli has been an assistant director at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts working with directors Jenn Thompson, Sam Buntrock, and former Denver Center Artistic Director, Kent Thompson. Eli is a member of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab in New York City. Throughout the appointment, Eli will split his time between Trinidad, Denver, and New York in an effort to draw artists from across the nation to Trinidad, Colorado.

Heading into its 16th season, the SCRT is the region’s crown-jewel for performing arts. Each summer the SCRT brings a company of 15-20 actors, designers, and directors to Trinidad for the repertory company. In 2013, Trinidad became a Certified Colorado Creative District and is now the demonstration project for Colorado’s Space to Create program fueling a surge in downtown historic building renovations and creative enterprise. With a rich history in the arts and creative achievement, Trinidad's downtown Creative District is a focal point of tourism and continued economic growth. SCRT sits in the heart of it all.
